What to sow in April
April is when the outdoor work begins. The compost is warm enough for radish, lettuce, spinach and rocket, and on a sheltered balcony growth is noticeably faster than in March. Night frost is still possible: heat-loving plants stay indoors until mid-May. Anything outside now may catch a cold night — an old sheet over the trough is enough.

Harvest now
Jobs this month
- Harden off indoor-raised plants with a few hours outside each day.
- Keep a sheet or fleece ready for cold nights.
- Thin your March sowings; crowding costs more harvest than a failed seed.
