Sowing calendar
What to sow in December
December is the darkest month of the year and everything growing shows it. Without a grow light, microgreens are practically the only sowing worth doing: ten days from seed to harvest is short enough to sidestep the lack of light. Beyond that, this is a month for keeping plants alive rather than pushing them on.
Start indoors
Sow outdoors
Too cold or too dark to sow outdoors — wait for spring.

Jobs this month
- Sow microgreens for something fresh on the table over the holidays.
- Keep plants away from radiators; dry air is the main risk now.
- Draw up a sowing plan for spring while you still remember what worked this year.
