What to sow in January
January is the month when almost nothing works outdoors and indoor sowing only works with a lamp. There is too little daylight for sturdy seedlings: anything sown now without a grow light stretches long and floppy. Microgreens are the exception — you harvest them young enough not to miss the light. Otherwise this is a month for planning, ordering seed and cleaning pots.
Start indoors
Sow outdoors
Too cold or too dark to sow outdoors — wait for spring.

Jobs this month
- Order seed while the range is still complete.
- Wash pots and trays in hot water to clear mould and overwintering eggs.
- Check overwintering plants for drought — indoors dries out faster than you expect.
