Sowing calendar

What to sow in February

February is when the season starts, but only indoors. Daylight is noticeably lengthening, which is enough for the first leafy crops on a bright windowsill. Outside, the compost is still too cold and wet for anything to germinate. Sow modestly: one trough of lettuce now is more useful than ten that all outgrow their pots in March.

Start indoors

Sow outdoors

Too cold or too dark to sow outdoors — wait for spring.

Jobs this month

  • Give seedlings the brightest spot you have and turn the pots every other day.
  • Keep the windowsill clear of curtains at night — behind them it is nearly outdoor temperature.
  • Refresh the top layer of compost on overwintering herbs.
